Pictured below are the winners of the HBAA 2006 Club Awards. The awards were handed out at the club banquet in February of 2007, of which all members and their spouses or significant other are invited to attend. The banquet was well attended and the food was excellent. A look at the award winners are below. Congratulations everyone!
The club also presented the Fort Hays State University Foundation with a $10,000 check to endow a scholarship for $250 per semester, which is awarded to a student in the wildlife biology department. Accepting the check for Fort Hays State was Tim Chapman, seated in the center below.
Sponsor Award: This award is given annually to a person, organization, or business that contributes greatly toward the working success of HBAA by supporting meetings, kids activities, the Big Bass Challenge, and promotes HBAA in the community. The award for 2006 was given to Western Beverage of Hays, and accepting the award on their behalf was Heather Rupp, pictured below on the right.
Mr. Bass: Given to member who accumulates the greatest total pounds of fish from the year's all day tournaments. Mr. Bass represents the club at the next season's Kansas qualifier tournament. This year's winner was Dave Heffel. Dave was not able to attend this year's banquet.
Brother Bass: This award is given to the member with the second greatest total catch from the season's all day tournaments. In the event that Mr. Bass is unable to represent the club at the Kansas qualifier, the Brother Bass winner is given the opportunity to fish in the qualifier. This year's winner was Gene Gilreath, pictured below on the right.
Angler of the Year:
The award for Angler of the Year is bestowed upon the club angler that exemplifies all around excellence and participation in club tournaments and other activities such as meeting attendance, volunteering for Big Brothers/Big Sisters days, helping with CastingKids, and catching fish in tournaments. The recipient earns points for each activity in which they are involved, and this year's winner was also Gene Gilreath, pictured to the right.
Sportsman of the Year:
The award for Sportsman of the Year has much the same criteria as the Angler of the Year. However, this honor is bestowed upon the club member that accrues the most points for participation and angling while joining the club as a non-boater. This is just another way to show that people interested in the sport of angling can be involved and help spread the passion for the sport even without the pleasure of owning a boat. The award this year went to a much deserving Ferril Standage, who won the award for the second year in a row, pictured below.
